House of Mrs. von Stein
House of Mrs. von Stein
Striking baroque shapes, a bold pink color and diagonally opposite the Duchess Anna Amalia Library: Charlotte von Stein lived on the upper floor of the house for fifty years until her death in 1827. Many of these years were spent together with her husband, head groom Josias Freiherr von Stein, and their three children. The first floor housed the cavalry's horses and later social rooms and a Russian Orthodox church commissioned by the Russian Tsarevna Maria Pavlovna. Charlotte von Stein was not only a lady-in-waiting to Duchess Anna Amalia but also a close confidante of Goethe. She exchanged over 1,700 letters with him.
