Haus Hohe Pappeln - Henry van de Velde's residence

Haus Hohe Pappeln was the private residence of the Belgian architect and designer Henry van de Velde (1863-1957), who came to Weimar in 1902 as artistic advisor to Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst. Van de Velde had the house built in 1907/08 according to his own plans and lived in it with his wife Maria and their five children until 1917. In addition to the architecture, fixtures and furniture, van de Velde also designed the garden. The central hub and heart of the house is the living room on the main floor. The living room with adjoining study and dining room, the staircase to the upper floor and the side staircase are accessed from here. Van de Velde deliberately avoided ornamental embellishments. Instead, he focused on the aesthetics of modern industry and designed the Hohe Pappeln house according to principles of practicality. The house is a unique work of art in which van de Velde's signature can be found in every detail.
