Museum of local history and technology Großmehlra
The museum is located in an old manor house, which was built in 1887. At that time it served as a granary and sheep barn. After the Second World War, the building was transformed into the MAS (machinery lending station) and village smithy. After the merging of farmers and new farmers, the MAS became an agricultural technology enterprise (MTS).
In several years agricultural equipment as well as large-scale equipment (e.g. a steam engine, from the industrial history of Mühlhausen) including house inventory from the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century were collected and secured. From this fund several exhibition rooms were arranged in the former granary (upper floor), which represent the handicraft, trade as well as the domestic living. 800m² of exhibition space provide an insight into the time around 1921, e.g. grandma's "good room", bedroom, kitchen, elementary school, post office, colonial goods store, music room of the famous composer Hugo Riemann (born here, 1849-1919) and six other handicrafts.
In a short time, 1000m² of exhibition space on the first floor was redesigned by volunteer work. This resulted in the village smithy, a social room, the foyer, the handicapped accessible sanitary facilities with changing table and an engine hall with a large number of stationary engines and other historical agricultural machinery.
In the outdoor area of the former manor house there are even more historical agricultural machines, engines and an exhibition on water power. Furthermore, one can marvel at a steam sawmill and a stone crusher. Another exhibition area is the newly roofed barn with a harvester, a binder, a grass mower and other equipment for soil cultivation.
