Lucka Local History Museum
From the municipal shepherd's house to the Lucka local history museum
This house at no. 50 Altenburger Strasse was saved from further decay and demolition and renovated with subsidies and municipal funds. Today it has become a building worth seeing in Lucka and is the best preserved building in our town in its original construction.
The half-timbered house was built and maintained by the town council in 1788 as a "shepherd's house". (First entry in the fire register in 1788 and valued at 75 Reichstalers) Since the Middle Ages, almost all communities had a so-called "Huthegerechtigkeit", i.e. the citizens of these communities could entrust their livestock to a shepherd paid by the community during the day, who moved with them to the Hutheweide (or Huthewiese).
The shepherd was employed all year round and the town also had to provide him with living space. The alley behind the house was therefore also called Hirtengasse. The addition of a stable increased the value of the house in the 1823 fire register by 75 Thaler to 150 Thaler. The size of the property is given as 160 square meters (100 square meters of house with stable and 60 square meters of garden). For many decades, this small house in Altenburger Strasse was the last house in Lucka in the direction of Hagenest.
