Local history museum "Spittel" Berga
The term "Spittel" is the common name for a hospital. It is one of the oldest houses in Berga, as it was not destroyed in the great town fire of 1842.
The history of this building goes back to a foundation set up in 1692 by Susanna Barbara von Reitzenstein, née von Watzdorf, for her birthplace Berga. The hospital for the poor and needy was also built with the interest from this foundation.
Another foundation, established after the death of Kaiser Wilhelm I in 1888, was to serve the same purpose. For this reason, both foundations were united to form the Kaiser Wilhelm Foundation with effect from January 1, 1891.
The building was used for residential purposes until the 1980s. After a thorough refurbishment, the DRK Greiz social welfare center was located here in line with its original purpose. The building has been unused since 1998.
In 1999, it was handed over to the Bergaer Heimat- und Geschichtsverein for use. It now houses a small museum with collections on regional history and an exhibition of rocks and minerals from the surrounding area.
