Opened in 1985, the museum presents an exhibition on the life and work of the first German composer of international importance and his cultural and historical context.

Concerts and house music, the Baroque Music Weekend and the musical museum tours, exhibitions in the Schütz House Gallery and colloquia, practical music events on the performance practice of early music for amateurs and (semi-)professionals, the Heinrich Schütz Music Festival in October and music-making with children and adults "Köstritzer Flötenkinder" and "Köstritzer Spielleute" are all part of the house's annual program.
