Hellgrevenhof
Hellgrevenhof
The Hellgrevenhof, located at the former George Gate of the Eisenach city wall, is the oldest preserved town house in Eisenach. It once belonged to the prestigious Hellgreve family, whose ancestral ties to Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia are significant.
According to legend, Master Klingsor descended here when he came to Eisenach in connection with the Singers' Contest. The master is said to have looked up to the stars and foreseen the birth of Elisabeth, who was later canonized. This is how it happened: Elizabeth was born in 1207 as a Hungarian king's daughter and was brought to Wartburg Castle at the age of four. Upon her arrival, she and her splendid entourage first took up quarters in the Hellgrevenhof.
