On the border with the neighboring Ilmkreis district, the small village of Hengelbach lies in a valley basin on the Hengelbach. Now part of the town of Königsee and first mentioned in 1106 as Vorwerk Hengelbach, it was, like most of the villages in the area, one of the so-called monastery villages. The small, very quiet village on the northern edge of the "Rinne- u. Rottenbachtal" nature reserve is located in a scenic area. Wooded low mountain slopes in the vicinity of the village are a magnet for hikers and tourists. From here, you can go on extended hikes to Solsdorf, Paulinzella with its famous Romanesque monastery ruins, the museum on the history of the monastery, forestry and hunting in the hunting lodge and the "From stone axe to chainsaw" exhibition in the forestry office, as well as to the neighboring Ilm district (e.g. the smallest brewery in Thuringia in Singen).
