Herder Monument Weimar
Herder Monument Weimar
Johann Gottfried Herder, philosopher and theologian, was appointed General Superintendent of the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar in 1776 at the instigation of Goethe. The larger-than-life bronze figure in front of his former place of work in the town church of St. Peter and Paul shows Herder in clerical garb, holding sheets of text with his motto "Light, Love, Life" in his left hand and his right hand on his heart. The monument by Ludwig Schaller stands on a multi-structured plinth, clad with large shell limestone slabs.
