Duke's tomb in Altenstein Castle Park
Duke's tomb in Altenstein Castle Park
Duke Georg II died in 1914 and just four years later, in 1918, his successor and son Duke Bernhard III ended the regency of the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen, which had lasted for 237 years. Soon afterwards, a tomb for the last reigning Duke of Saxe-Meiningen and his wife Duchess Charlotte was erected on the western edge of the Fohlenwiese. The coffin of the Duchess was buried here in 1921. Seven years later, her husband was also laid to rest here.
