Hexengrund

As Hexengrund the valley of the western left Saale-tributary Wiedabach in the north of the District of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in Thuringia designated. It has a length of around 11 km and is located in the municipality of Uhlstädt-Kirchhasel between the districts Forging in the northwest and Zeutsch in the southeast. Most of the valley is covered by the National road 2391 developed.

The water-rich Wiedabach stream, which rises at the 518 m high Hummelsberg near Schmieden and flows into the Saale near Zeutsch, powered a total of seven mills until a few decades ago. The villages and hamlets of Zeutsch are located in the Hexengrund, Beutelsdorf, Röbschütz, Heilingen, Dorndorf, Rödelwitz, Engerda and blacksmiths, as well as the Schauenforst castle ruins from the 12th century. The villages of Rödelwitz, Röbschütz and Zeutsch are Slavic Origin.

The name Hexengrund comes from the old name for winegrowers who were called "Heckerleute" or "Heckersleute" here. On the sunny southern slopes of the Shell limestonemountains, and especially in the area around Heilingen, there have been numerous vineyards for centuries. As early as 973, the "excellent wine" of Heilingen was mentioned in a document by Emperor Otto II. noted. From the 18th century onwards, viticulture lost its importance due to the damage caused by the Phylloxera and the focus therefore shifted increasingly to fruit growing. Around 1928, the Engerda Hallway around 30,000 fruit trees.
