Henfstädt rear castle

The Hintere Schloss Henfstädt, also Zufrass'sches manor, is a former manor in Henfstädt in Thuringia, which was built in the 16th century in the Renaissance style was built. It is one of the few surviving remnants of the Osterburg castle, which stood on a hill on the right bank of the Werra in the Middle Ages. For a long time, the castle was owned by the von Hanstein family, who had it built in 1595/96. It later belonged to the von Harbou family, who were expropriated after the Second World War. The castle was then used for various purposes, including as refugee accommodation, a boarding school and a chicken coop. Due to weather damage in 1980, dry rot, a dangerous fungus that destroys the wood, developed in the castle. The castle was in danger of collapsing and was secured from 2015 to 2017 with the help of the German Foundation for Monument Protection and the Thuringian State Office for Monument Preservation. The castle still characterizes the townscape of Henfstädt today and is an important cultural monument.
