Historic Old Town
Historic Old Town
Arriving by car in one of the free visitor parking lots, the guest is guided to the old town by the tourist signage system. The farm houses there with interesting house marks present themselves in the style of the baroque. Their old splendor could be restored by consistent renovation accompanied by the preservation of historical monuments. The best place to start a tour through the old town of Querfurt is the market square. This is dominated by the town hall, the core of which dates back to the late Gothic period and is still the seat of the town administration. Opposite is the city information center, where you can get flyers, souvenirs and other information. If you continue walking, you will come across the city wall, two-thirds of which is still intact, through which the visitor can very well understand the former size of Querfurt. A visit to the late Gothic town church is just as worthwhile as a tour of the town cemetery, where gravestones from five centuries can be found. Idyllically situated is the Thalgarten, which leads to Thaldorf, where the monument to St. Brun, the Braunsbrunnen, is located. In summer, a visit to the Querfurt city pool, located at the foot of the castle, is worthwhile. Stainless steel pools with sports and animation area, giant slide and diving tower offer recreation for young and old here. You can learn more about the history of the town and its most famous personalities, such as Johannes Schlaf, the important naturalist, or Jacob Christian Schäffer, the universal scholar and inventor of the washing machine, on a guided tour, which the town information office will gladly arrange. As a souvenir of a visit to Querfurt, a bottle of the wine "Edler von Querfurt", which is grown on the former monastery vineyard " St. Bruno" not far from the town, or the herbal liqueur "Dicker Heinrich", named after the large round keep on the castle, is recommended.
