Historic town hall Jena

Characterized by its baroque half-timbered tower and pointed hipped roofs, the two-storey semi-detached house was first mentioned in 1365, making it one of the oldest surviving town hall buildings in Germany.

On the upper floor is the remarkable town hall hall with a wooden ceiling that has been painted several times over the centuries. The painting visible today dates from the early 20th century.

The baroque, eight-sided tower between the steep hipped roofs was built in 1755 and features an astronomical clock dating from 1755. Its central figure, „Schnapphans“, snaps in vain for a golden ball every time the bell strikes the hour. The beautiful story of Schnapphans and the other Seven Wonders of Jena can also be found in the City Museum.

Next to the town hall is an ensemble of commercial buildings, completed in 1997, which are known as parrot houses because of their color.
