Hörselberg Museum

The museum and its historical ensemble of buildings

There is a listed ensemble of buildings in the center of Schönau. These include the church, an old school building and the vicarage with rectory, stable, barn, wash house and bakehouse. The centerpiece is the stable building, which is home to the Hörselberg Museum.

Exhibitions in the Hörselberg Museum

Visitors can learn interesting facts about the Hörselberge mountains, their geology and formation with unique fossil finds, the rich fauna and very special orchid flora, as well as the legends with their mysterious mysticism. The work of the Tannhäuser composer Richard Wagner and the fairytale collector Ludwig Bechstein is particularly associated with the Hörselberge. This is honored accordingly in the museum.

Based on the beautiful old bakehouse, which is still used for village events, the barn building houses an exhibition on the regional baking trade. The long baking tradition in Thuringia and the Hörsel valley in particular is demonstrated here using old baking machines and a variety of equipment, as well as the historically recreated "baker's store".

The "gallery" under the barn roof is used for temporary exhibitions (May to October).
