Hohenwarte
Hohenwarte
In the Thuringian Slate Mountains, at the foot of the dam wall of the Hohenwarte reservoir, lies the village of Hohenwarte. Here, the Saale flows from the dam of the Hohenwarte reservoir into the equalizing reservoir of the pumped-storage power plant. A leisure center with a playground and miniature golf course has been built on the banks of the Saale in recent years. The Thuringian Sea, as the Hohenwarte reservoir is called, attracts water sports enthusiasts and tourists with a wide range of leisure activities. With its fjord-like landscape, the Thuringian Sea is one of the most scenic reservoirs in Germany. And everything is possible in and on the water: here you can go diving, rent motorboats and pedal boats or take round trips on the water. The 642m long tubular railroad, which connects the upper and lower basins of the pumped storage power plant, characterizes the townscape of Hohenwarte.
