The village of Holzhausen lies at the foot of Wachsenburg Castle on the eastern edge of the Drei-Gleichen region. The history of the village, which was first mentioned in a document in 786, is closely linked to Wachsenburg Castle. The castle was the seat of various feudal lords and the scene of numerous local disputes. Today, the historic well house and the Hohelohe Tower can be visited. From the tower of the castle, located 421 m above sea level, you have a magnificent panoramic view over the Thuringian heartland and the foothills of the Thuringian Forest. Holzhausen's gems include well-kept half-timbered houses and the church. Well-signposted hiking trails lead through the entire area. One is dedicated to the painter and graphic artist Otto Knöpfer, who grew up in Holzhausen. On hikes through this hilly landscape, you can experience a particularly rich variety of flora.
