Hummelshain
Hummelshain
The small place Hummelshain is located in the middle of one of the largest contiguous forest areas of the Saale-Holzland district. The first documentary mention goes back to the year 1350.
The place originated as a starting point for princely hunts in the region rich in forests and game. This is still evidenced today by the Old and the New Hunting lodge as well as several historic functional and outbuildings in the village area.
But even in the forest, people eager to discover will find traces of this tradition. Halfway to Kleineutersdorf is the Hunting ground Rieseneck with running trenches, underground passages and hunting screens. On the southern edge of the complex there is a tower-like building - the Duke's chair. This unusual pleasure palace was built in the 20th century as a private retreat for Duke Ernst II of Saxony-Altenburg and is now a popular photo motif.
Another beautiful hiking destination is the Leubengrund with its mills and fish ponds. The Linz Mill, about 3 km from Hummelshain, is developed into a popular hotel and offers regional Thuringian cuisine.
