Ida Monument Bad Liebenstein
Ida Monument Bad Liebenstein
The Ida monument, located below Liebenstein Castle, was erected in 1854 by Duke Bernhard II of Saxe-Meiningen as a sign of gratitude to his sister Ida, based on plans by Friedrich August Stüler, court architect and director of the castle building commission in Berlin. After the Second World War, the monument was destroyed apart from the stele. In 2004, thanks to supporters and sponsors, the monument was restored to its original state. Princess Ida, herself the mother of six children, was very popular due to her popularity and support of the population. Through Ida's mediation, Friedrich Froebel was able to establish the first school for the training of kindergarten teachers in Germany in 1849, first in Liebenstein and then from 1850 in Marienthal Castle, which was made available to him by the Ducal House of Saxe-Meiningen. On the front of the Gothic-style stele is a marble relief portrait of Duchess Ida. Beneath it is the quote „What has passed does not return, but if it went down brightly, it shines back for a long time“ from Karl Förster's cycle of poems „Remembrance and Hope“.
