Ihlefeld cross
Ihlefeld cross
The cross dates back to the first half of the 15th century, making it the oldest field monument in the Hainich. It commemorates a hunting accident involving a brown bear. The scene on the front of the stone shows a terrified hunter with a hunting spear in his hand, who is jumped on and thrown down by a bear standing on its hind paws.
In 1993 it was found in a poor condition, it was badly tilted, the head was broken off and one arm was missing. It was restored by a stonemason from the Oberdorla local history association. In the process, the above-mentioned grooves came to light.
