Jörgentor Münnerstadt

The Jörgen-, Jürgen- or Georgstor was named after the former St. George's Chapel at today's cemetery.

Construction and history:

  • The gate has five storeys, the uppermost of which is a half-timbered structure that was completed in the early 16th century.

  • In 1595, Julius Echter had a Renaissance porch with a round archway built in front of the gate. A laurel branch was carved into it. This is said to be an allusion to the nearby river "Lauer". The Latin word for laurel is "laurus".

  • As with the Upper Gate, there is also a Madonna figure above the archway. This was created around 1380.

  • Next to the figure is the coat of arms of Julius Echter and the Münnerstadt coat of arms.

  • During the Thirty Years' War, Münnerstadt was attacked by the Swedes from the east. In the Jörgentor, the town's east gate, two cannonballs were walled into the wall, presumably as a reminder of this war. The Swedish War is also the subject of the annual Münnerstadt local play: "Die Schutzfrau von Münnerstadt".

  • On the fourth floor of the gate was the privy for the doorman. The sloping outlet of this facility is still clearly visible on the side of the "Zehntscheune".

  • In 2022 and 2023, the half-timbering of the Jörgen Gate was restored.

  • The "Jörgentorpark" with the "Jörgentor playground" is directly adjacent to the gate.
