Kahla

A small town situated at the foot of Leuchtenburg Castle, which can be seen from afar, is
Kahla. The town south of Jena, also known as the porcelain town, is characterized by 1000 years of history. The small town with 6,800 inhabitants impresses with its almost completely preserved medieval town wall and its historic town center as well as the late medieval town church of St. Margarethen with its completely preserved pre-Reformation four-bell chimes.
The porcelain industry, which has been based in Kahla since 1844, made the name Kahla synonymous with tableware. Porcelain is still produced in Kahla today. Guided tours are organized at Porzellanwerk Kahla GmbH, where visitors can experience the production of porcelain up close: An exciting mix of manual work and ultra-modern technology. The local history museum in one of Kahla's oldest houses provides an insight into the living conditions of porcelain makers in the past century and the permanent exhibition
Porcelain Worlds at the medieval Leuchtenburg castle takes up the history of white gold in an unusual and interactive way.
The town's charming location on the Saale river, below the rocky massif of the 352-metre-high Dohlenstein, and the densely wooded surroundings make Kahla an ideal starting point for hiking and cycling tours in the middle Saale valley and its side valleys. Well signposted cycle and hiking trails lead to the Rieseneck hunting lodge, one of the best-preserved baroque hunting lodges in Europe, or to the popular Leubengrund.
