Kahlenberg

Kahlenberg is a district of the municipality Wutha-Farnroda southwest of Eisenach. Kahlenberg was first mentioned in 1133. As feudal lords of the Fulda monastery, the Lords of Wangenheim, an old Thuringian noble family, determined events in the village for centuries.

The characteristic forest village is a good starting point for hiking tours on the Hörselberge or in the Thuringian Forest.

The Hörselberge, a striking, cave-rich mountain range made of shell limestone, which lies to the north of the village, is easy to reach on foot. The legendary mountain range has a number of highlights to offer hikers with an interest in history and art. The Jesus fountainwhich is located on the ascent to the Großer Hörselberg, is a reminder of the time of the shepherds and sheepherders who once wandered through the area with their flocks. The Hörselberg is also identified with the Venusberg in the Tannhäuser saga. Richard Wagner had himself trained at the Venus cavity to his opera Tannhäuser and the Singers' War at Wartburg Castle inspire.

Since the 19th century, the Hörselberge have been a popular excursion destination, also because of the legends and stories surrounding the Venus Cave. In 1880, an association proposed the construction of a clubhouse on the Großer Hörselberg, which was also to be used as an inn and refuge. The Mountain inn at an altitude of 484 m is still open today and remains a popular excursion destination with a magnificent view.

An absolute must is a trip to the World Heritage Site Wartburg Castle in Eisenach. Known far beyond the country's borders and with an important history, it is a unique national monument.
