The historic cannon railway line was revitalized with the completion of the cannon railway cycle path in 2019 and is an attractive route for trolley drivers, cyclists and hikers.

The Kanonenbahn line has a long and interesting history. It was built at great expense after the Franco-Prussian War (1870/1871) and was once part of the strategic Berlin-Strasbourg (Alsace-Lorraine) railroad line. 

The Kanonenbahn cycle path runs for approx. 33 km along the disused railroad line from Dingelstädt to Frieda in Hesse. The route leads through five tunnels (e.g. the 1,530 m long Küllstedt Tunnel) and over the imposing 35 m high Unstrut viaduct in Lengenfeld unterm Stein. Visitors can enjoy picturesque views of the idyllic hilly and wooded landscapes of the Eichsfeld region at the numerous rest stops.

You can also „experience“ the cannon railroad on a draisine on the disused cannon railway tracks. The operators of the „Erlebnis-Draisine“ offer this leisure activity in the high season from April to November. Book this special ride in advance.
