Catholic Church Schwarza
Catholic Church Schwarza
In 1962, the property - Edelhofstraße 7 - was purchased by the Catholic community of Rudolstadt. After tough negotiations, the building permit was granted in 1963 to convert the barn into a worship space (the walls of the barn had to be preserved and so the church was built inside the barn).
On August 28, 1966, the church was solemnly consecrated by the auxiliary bishop Hugo Aufderbeck from Erfurt. For the altar 2 blocks of Bavarian granite could be acquired, which were actually intended for a large victory monument after the 2nd World War near Fürstenberg on the Oder. As an altar relic there is a piece of Don Bosco's robe walled in the altar (Don Bosco was that gifted saint who in the 2nd half of the 19th century did great things in the work with children and youth in Italy).
Since many workers resided in Schwarza due to the chemical fiber combine, the parishioners of the time chose St. Joseph as their church patron saint. His feast day is May 1, when Joseph is venerated as a man of labor, thus: "Joseph the Worker".
In the meantime, the church has been renovated several times. During the last thorough renovation, the church received a new roof, a new entrance area, a new heating system and a small tower with a bell.
