The Catholic Church St. Nicholas is located on the corner of Saalstraße and Brückenplatz in Kahla. It is a branch church of St. Elisabeth in Gera and belongs to the Gera deanery in the diocese of Dresden-Meißen.

As the inscription on the entrance side attests, the church, which belonged to a hospital, was rebuilt in 1486. From around 1550 until the end of the 19th century, it mainly served as the chapel of the former neighboring "old cemetery", but at times also as an alternative location for the town church when renovations or repairs were needed there. It has been home to the Catholic community since the mid-1950s.
