Kellermikwe Schmalkalden
Kellermikwe Schmalkalden
The uniquely well-preserved Kellermikwe Hoffnung 38 was uncovered in 2015 during excavations by the Thuringian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and Archaeology. It probably dates from the 16th/17th century. The front building was demonstrably owned by the Jewish Mandel family in the 18th/19th century. It can be assumed that they used the immersion bath in the courtyard-side cellar, perhaps also families from the immediate vicinity. The neighboring house at Lutherplatz 11, called the "Red House" because of the color of its façade, was demolished in 1976 and was an inn and butcher's shop owned by Michel Mandel. Abraham Mandel, who set up a foundation for the poor "regardless of their denomination", also came from this family.
