Church Zella St. Blasii
Church Zella St. Blasii
The predecessor building was destroyed by a major town fire on 25.05.1762. Due to the general hardship, reconstruction was only possible with great difficulty. The new church was consecrated on 27.11.1774. Weidner's main work, the Ohrdrufer Michaeliskirche built between 1754 and 1760, served as a model, but it burnt down completely in 1808. This is why the Zellaer Blasiuskirche, with its transverse oval floor plan, hipped saddle roof and tower projecting from the middle of the north wall, is one of the most important central church buildings in Thuringia. The interior, with its two-storey surrounding galleries, a pulpit altar on the southern long side and the council lodge opposite it, surprises with its amphitheatrical effect. The organ from 1778/79 is considered one of the most historically valuable late Baroque instruments in the Thuringian organ landscape. Its creator Johann Caspar Rommel from Roßdorf/Rhön (1721-1800) was one of the most important organ builders of his time.
