Climbing rock Steinwand near Poppenhausen (Wasserkuppe)
The Steinwand in the Rhön is a special climbing rock that has a lot to offer both beginners and ambitious climbers. Located not far from the Wasserkuppe, the Steinwand attracts climbing enthusiasts to the Rhön. The 500-metre-long rock face is one of the most unique rock formations in the Rhön.
The wall consists of vertically sloping volcanic phonolite 15 to 20 meters high and is divided into three sections. There are hundreds of climbing routes on the "Vordere Steinwand", the "Teufelskanzel" to the south and the "Hintere Steinwand". The levels of difficulty range from 2 to 9 on the UIAA scale. The wall sections are only a few meters apart and can all be reached on foot in a few minutes from the parking lot.
The routes are all very well secured with bolts. However, it is still advisable to have a set of wedges with you. The columnar rock structure offers numerous opportunities to secure the routes with additional mobile protection.
A special feature of the Steinwand is that all of the redirectors are accessible from above. This means that all routes can be easily climbed using the top rope. To minimize rope friction, it is advisable to bring longer slings and screw carabiners. The redirectors are often located on the summit plateaus of the pillars and not on the wall side.
The current climbing guide is available at the DAV Fulda office, at the DAV climbing center Fulda, at the Fulda sporting goods retailers Aufunddavon and doorout.com as well as directly on site at Gasthof Steinwand.
Those who prefer not to climb to lofty heights can walk around the fascinating rock.
The Steinwand is located on the premium hiking trail Milseburg" extra tour.
