The former Donndorf convent is now home to the Ländliche Heimvolkshochschule Thüringen e.V. The former Cistercian nunnery was first mentioned in a document in 1309. During the Peasants' War in 1525, rebellious peasants stormed the grounds. During the Reformation, the nunnery was abolished and converted into a Latin school. The monastery was ruled over since 1452 by the baronial family von Werthern, who were expropriated like many others after the 2nd World War.

In the 1990s, the former monastery complex in the small village of Donndorf was extensively renovated and has since housed the adult education center Ländliche Heimvolkshochschule Thüringen e.V., which organizes courses, conferences and educational retreats. The facility can also be booked for group events.
