Münchenlohra Monastery
Münchenlohra Monastery
The impressive three-nave pillar basilica of St. Gangolf is located in Münchenlohra in the Hainleite. The church once belonged to a Benedictine convent founded by the Counts of Lohra in the 12th century. The nearby Lohra Castle with its architecturally rare Romanesque double chapel is still a reminder of their rule. The counts had the Romanesque basilica built around 1170. During the Peasants' War in 1525, rebels invaded the monastery, the monastery and church were partially destroyed and the buildings fell into disrepair. In the 17th century, work began on the reconstruction of the church, which then suffered greatly due to its use as a Prussian state domain. The towers were demolished because the stones were needed elsewhere. It was not until the 1880s that the building was reconstructed in its current form in the neo-Romanesque style.
