Bad Klosterlausnitz monastery church
Bad Klosterlausnitz monastery church
The church belonged to a former Augustinian convent that was founded in the 12th century. After the decline of the convent, only part of the church was used as a village church, while the majority fell into disrepair. Additions and alterations changed the character of the church over the following centuries. In the 19th century, plans were made to rebuild the monastery church as faithfully as possible. The monastery church was re-consecrated in 1866.
The remarkable pillar basilica is considered one of the most beautiful churches in eastern Thuringia. With its old Romanesque east and neo-Romanesque west sections and a length of 48 meters and a width of 37 meters, the monastery church presents itself as a masterpiece of 19th century architecture.
The church can be visited on certain dates, which are published on the website of the Evangelical Lutheran parish. It is also possible to collect the key from the parish office and view the church independently.
