Button and regional museum Schmölln

The town of Schmölln, which was first mentioned in a document in 1066 under the name „zmulna“, lies in the idyllic Sprotte Valley in the far east of Thuringia.

Our button and regional museum offers a wealth of information on the development of the Schmölln button industry, which shaped the town's history for decades. In 1867, the brothers Hermann and Valentin Donath began producing walnut buttons. By the turn of the 20th century, 29 button factories had been established. Schmölln became a „button town“ with worldwide sales markets. In addition to photographs and documents, the exhibition shows raw materials used in button production, equipment and historical machines - and of course lots of buttons. In the regional history section, visitors can discover interesting facts about the town's history, the comb and brush industry, life as a farmer in Altenburg and the famous Schmölln Mutzbraten.

The museum is located directly on the Thuringian Chain of Towns, Thuringia Trail, Luther Trail and the Water Adventure Trail from Schmölln to Posterstein.
