Commandant's garden
Commandant's garden
The commander's garden is located on the Kilian bastion as part of the baroque Petersberg fortress in Erfurt.
The basic features and the modeling of the cavaliers date back to the Electorate of Mainz-Prussian fortress period of the Petersberg. The commanders were of noble origin and needed a representative garden embedded in the fortifications. Major alterations and redesigns took place over the previous fifty years. The last visible layer is the period when it was used as a pioneer house. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Kommandantenhaus served as a children's and youth recreation center.
The current use of the Commandant's Garden relates to the renovated Commandant's House with the new visitor center. It houses the permanent exhibition "The Petersberg - an exciting journey through time" about the history of the Petersberg. The commander's garden also serves as access for the new bridge to the Martin bastion. The garden offers space for tour groups to get their bearings or wait patiently for guided tours. At this idyllic spot, it is possible to enjoy a panoramic view over the city of Erfurt. Benches and sun loungers lend this place an air of exclusivity.
Various optical devices are set up for children and as a supplement to the exhibition education. Here you can view, zoom, mirror or explore the Petersberg in its various facets at selected locations.
At the back of the garden is the main access to the bridge to Bastion Martin.
