Krähenhütte - the resting place of Duke Ernst

The tombs of the last reigning prince Ernst II, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg, of Jülich, Cleves and Berg, also of Engern and Westphalia, Landgrave of Thuringia, Margrave of Meissen, Prince Count of Henneberg, Baron of Rieseneck and some of his family members lie somewhat dreamily on the edge of the village of Trockenborn in the direction of Wolfersdorf.
Duke Ernst was born in Altenburg Castle in 1871 as the son of Prince Moritz of Saxe-Altenburg. He took over the regency in Saxe-Altenburg in 1908 after marrying Princess Adelheid von Schaumburg-Lippe years earlier. This marriage only lasted until 1920.

During his reign, he left his mark on the area with the castles in Hummelshain and the hunting grounds on the Rieseneck.
He was very open to science and research.
After abdicating the throne in 1918, Duke Ernst II moved his residence to Schloss Fröhliche Wiederkunft in Wolfersdorf.
In 1934, he married the opera soubrette Marie Triebel, now Baroness von Rieseneck. The close family ties to Russia - Princess Elisabeth of Saxe-Altenburg married Grand Duke Konstaninovich in St. Petersburg in 1884 and was able to flee to Germany after the turmoil of the October Revolution - meant that Duke Ernst and his wife were the only former ruling princes to remain in their castle in the GDR after 1945.
On March 22, 1955, Duke Ernst died at his castle Fröhliche Wiederkunft.
His wife followed him two years later. Both are buried in the Krähenhütte.
