From Kirchhasel, you can reach the small settlement of Kuhfraß (300 m above sea level, 124 inhabitants), located in the upper Hirschgrund, via district road 18. The outlying estate, which originally belonged to the Kochberg estate, was first mentioned in 1428. In a document about the hamlet settlement at that time, a cattle pasture "in dem Kuefraße" is mentioned. In 1825 the Parry family, in succession to the von Kochbergs, took over the estate and converted it into the Hirschhügel hunting lodge. In 1892, Count Henckel von Donnersmarck inherited the castle and expanded it to become the permanent residence of his family. In 1941, the count set up a children's country home in the "New House". After the unjust expropriation of the von Donnersmarck family in 1945, Hirschhügel became a retirement home and, from 1978, additionally a psychiatric nursing home. After the takeover by Sozialwerk Heuser in 1991, the buildings were renovated and modernized. Today, the home's residents make up a large part of the village's population. The charming landscape with its forests and meadow valleys as well as the nearby Kochberg Castle are an Eldorado for hiking and culture lovers.
