Bad Tennstedt spa gardens

The history of the spa gardens began after the discovery of the sulphur spring. As early as 1812, the founding statutes of the Brunnengesellschaft stipulated that selected shareholders were to take care of the creation of a „bathing garden“ so that the expected bathers could recover from the sulphur baths on paths and among fresh greenery.
In 1844, the town bought the existing baths with the sulphur spring and the associated garden. The price amounted to 700 thalers (equivalent to around €34,000). After the sulphur baths were taken over by the pharmacist Budensieg in 1856, the then bathing garden was laid out like a park and planted with rare trees and shrubs. The oldest trees are more than 150 years old. The spa gardens were extended for the first time in 1924 towards the war memorial.
In 2005, the spa park was given a new highlight, which is actively used by the local population and their guests: the Kneipp facility. The facility consists of a Kneipp treading pool with clear water drawn from the Brucheich pond. The water has a temperature of between 9 and 10° Celsius and, according to tests, can be used for balneological - i.e. medical - purposes. So that the good Tennstedt sulphur water can also be used outside the clinic and physiotherapy, a Kneipp treading pool with the water of the „Stinking Newt“ was built in the immediate vicinity of the spring pavilion. The sulphur water here is not running water and can only be used during the warmer seasons. This pool was moved to the other side of the Oede stream during the second construction phase, including barefoot paths.
Since 2019, the spa park itself has been undergoing treatment. Due to the drought and the associated pest infestation by the bark beetle, conifers and conifers in particular had to be felled. As part of the redesign, the spa park was fundamentally redesigned, more than 50 resistant trees and bushes were replanted and roses were planted, among other things.
