The village of Badra lies between the Windleite and Kyffhäuser mountains on the border between Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. Badra was first mentioned in a document in 1197 as a Saxon palatinate estate owned by Henry the Lion. One of the village's landmarks is a group of lime trees that were planted more than two centuries ago to mark the 300th anniversary of the Reformation. Visitors are particularly impressed by the landscape around this part of the municipality of Kyffhäuserland - a paradise for nature lovers: Badraer Schweiz offers fauna and flora that is rare throughout Europe, with typical plants of gypsum karst areas and dry valleys with steppe flora that has been protected for almost 100 years. The nature conservation station in Numburg on the southern shore of the Helmestausee reservoir is a popular spot for birdwatching, especially in the fall, as thousands of cranes rest around the large reservoir near Kelbra on their way south. Hikers can explore the region on the supra-regional Luther Trail, for example.
