Holzdorf country estate near Weimar
Holzdorf country estate near Weimar
Just behind Weimar, barely 15 minutes away by car or train, is the idyllically situated former manor house. Adjacent to it is a beautiful park, which is considered a high-ranking garden monument. The former owner, Dr. Otto Krebs, had the grounds extensively redesigned in the 1920s in the style of French gardens. Romantic paths, a water lily basin set in brick, arranged garden rooms and the rose and perennial garden still bear witness to his love of all things green.
Empty pedestals and garden spaces that were once adorned with life-size sculptures can be seen again and again in the park. Not only the Weimar sculptor Joseph Heise produced figures for Holzdorf, but international artists such as Degas, Rodin and Meunier were also represented. The fate of this high-ranking art: destroyed, stolen, with a new home in the National Gallery in Berlin or auctioned at Christie's in London.
