Ebersdorf Landscape Park

The
Ebersdorf Landscape Park is located in the town of
Saalburg-Ebersdorf in the district of Ebersdorf, directly in the
Thuringian Slate Mountains/Upper Saale. The park was declared a landscape conservation area in 1958. It has been a listed building since 1968.
The picturesque location of the village on the north-south foothills of the Thuringian Forest not far from the
Bleilochtalsperre is popular. At the end of the 17th century, the small community developed into a prestigious residence under the Reuss princes of the younger line. The principality left its mark on the town with a unique historical heritage.
This also includes the 54-hectare
Landscape park. It was created in the 18th century by the master builder Christian Friedrich Schuricht as an extension of the baroque garden laid out in 1710. Among other things, the orangery in the classicist style and a typical English garden with large open meadow areas and picturesquely arranged solitary plantings were created. Mighty pines, larches, beeches, lime trees, firs and spruces dominate the park. The
Pond house, idyllically situated
Pfotenteich, and the
tomb of the princely family, the only open-air sculpture by
Ernst Barlach in Thuringia, are considered highlights and popular photo motifs. Paths lead through the park on winding paths and benches invite you to relax and linger.
The external locations of the
BUGA 2021 in Ebersdorf included the ensemble
Castle and
Landscape Park and the Moravian Church founded by Count Zinzendorf with its colony around the baroque
Zinzendorfplatz and the
Gottesacker, the cemetery.
