The national park community of Lauterbach, along the Lauter river, was first mentioned in a document in 1115. The "Sonntagsbrunnen", the town's landmark, is still known from tradition. Today, the village has a well-kept historic center with many lovingly renovated half-timbered houses. All the important village focal points can be found here - the church, the village green, the old school, the kindergarten and a former estate. New residential areas have also been created. Embedded in the charming Hainich landscape is Central Germany's only hang-gliding and paragliding slope, the Harsberg. A new tourist center with a youth hostel is being built here.
