Lengefelder Warte
Lengefelder Warte
The control room is located on the main road 247 from Mühlhausen to Dingelstädt, an old road crossing between the free imperial city of Mühlhausen and the Electorate of Eichsfeld.
It is the only one of the nine former control rooms of the Mühlhäuser Landgraben to have been preserved. Built around 1360/80, the round tower is made of quarrystone masonry and has a conical roof. The tower has a height of 13.5 m and a diameter of around 5.80 m with walls between 0.70 and 1.00 m thick.
Only the remains of the foundations and walls of the Eigenröder and Eigenriedener Warte still exist. From the middle of the 14th century, the so-called Landwehr, a defensive system consisting of double ditches in some places, up to three ramparts and nine watchtowers at the most important road passages, was built to secure the city territory and the urban area of the free imperial city of Mühlhausen. The course of the Landgraben with a length of approx. 24 km in the west and north of the territory borders on the Eichsfeld. This is followed by the neighboring Landwehren. On the Eichsfeld side of the Landgraben, there has been an infirmary since the Middle Ages, also known as the „Schwarze Hose“.
