Weimar Reading Museum (Niketempel)
Weimar Reading Museum (Niketempel)
The Reading Museum on Goetheplatz is an outstanding example of neoclassical architecture in Weimar. It initially served as a clubhouse for the Weimar Reading Society founded by Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna. The two-storey building, erected by Carl Heinrich Ferdinand Streichhan, is designed in the style of a Greek temple and its Ionic columned opening on the upper floor is reminiscent of the Temple of Nike on the Acropolis. Inside the building, political, scientific and entertaining magazines were made available to the public. It has been owned by the city since 1922 and has since served as the headquarters of the building regulations office and the GDR travel agency. Today it is home to the city radio station LOTTE.
