Church of Our Lady Arnstadt

In the entire central German region, there is hardly a more exemplary building for the transitional period from Romanesque to Gothic: the Liebfrauenkirche shows a successful symbiosis of both eras right up to its completion. This is particularly evident in the two towers: while one still has typical Romanesque round arches, the other impresses with the filigree beauty of Gothic pointed arch windows.

Until the beginning of the Reformation, the Liebfrauenkirche was of outstanding importance, as it was far more than just a parish church. Benedictine nuns had established their monastic life in the middle of the town since the 14th century.

Today, the Liebfrauenkirche houses outstanding art treasures, such as the epitaph of Count Günther XLI and Katharina von Nassau, the beautiful Madonna made of lime wood and a magnificent winged altar.
