Liszt House

Franz Liszt lived in the former court gardener's house on the edge of the park on the Ilm River from 1869 until his death in 1886. Here he taught numerous young and talented pianists from Germany and abroad. As early as 1887, Grand Duke Carl Alexander had the composer's living quarters opened as a memorial site. The music salon and the study have been preserved in their original furnishings, including the Bechstein grand piano.

Franz Liszt's apartment on the second floor of the house can once again be experienced as an authentic interior of the Wilhelminian period after careful restoration of the furniture and reconstruction of room textiles as well as wall paintings.

The living room and study as the central salon, as well as the bedroom, have been preserved in their original furnishings. The dining room represents an approximation of the earlier furnishings, and the servants' room is furnished purely for museum purposes. Since 2006, the first floor has been home to a permanent multimedia exhibition on Liszt's life, work and influence, which was created as a cooperative project between the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, the FRANZ LISZT SCHOOL of Music and the Bauhaus University Weimar.
