Lion Fountain Weimar
Lion Fountain Weimar
Hard to miss at over five meters high: Weimar's lion fountain. A lion - the heraldic animal of the Grand Duchy of Weimar-Saxony-Eisenach and the Counts of Orlamünde - rises above a round sandstone fountain basin in the lower part of the moat. It is the highest and most stately fountain in Weimar. In the front paws, the lion holds the coat of arms of the Wettin dynasty. A bowl with four lion heads protrudes from the middle of the fountain, serving as a gargoyle. The fountain was once donated by Duchess Maria Pavlovna and has since been renovated several times.
