Luther memorial Möhra

The monument is located on Lutherplatz in the center of the small town. According to tradition, an old lime tree once stood on this spot, under which the reformer Martin Luther is said to have preached on his return journey from Worms to Wittenberg on May 4, 1521.

The idea to erect the monument dates back to February 18, 1846, the 300th anniversary of Martin Luther's death. Although the municipality of Möhra was too small to finance the monument, funding was secured thanks to a nationwide appeal for donations and additional interest from international donors, including the British Queen and the Swedish and Prussian royal houses.

The statue of the reformer was created in 1858 according to a design by the Meiningen sculptor Müller in the Jacob Daniel Burgschmiet foundry. It was transported to Immelborn via the Werratal railroad, which already existed at the time, and the last few kilometers to the installation site by horse-drawn carriage. .

The monument was finally inaugurated on June 25, 1861.

The pedestal on which the statue of Martin Luther stands shows three reliefs with key scenes of the reformer: the posting of the theses in Wittenberg, the abduction at Altenstein Castle and the translation of the Bible at Wartburg Castle. The open Bible shows words from the Gospel of John on one side:

„If you continue in my word, you are my true disciples and will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. “ (Joh, 8, 31-32)

On the other side is Ludwig Bechstein's dedication:

„You have erected a monument to yourself, Luther, and engraved the message of salvation clearly and deeply in marble tablets of history. That truth is eternal and that the Lord destroys the deceit that poisons the world.“

The courageous resistance of the community of Möhra during the Second World War prevented the monument to weapons production from being dismantled and melted down. In 1991, the monument was renovated and renewed by the still existing manufacturing company Burgschmiet.
