Magdalen Church

The oldest part of the church is the church tower, the base of which is considered a possible remnant of the original Romanesque church. The church underwent a major renovation in the late Gothic style around 1498 (corner ashlar with master builder's head, inscription stone on the tower, late Gothic wall tabernacle). The change of patron saint is conceivable in this context. The vaulted tower basement is extensively decorated with high-quality Renaissance paintings from the end of the 16th century. In 1621-1623, a larger nave with a tiled roof and half-timbered upper storey was built while retaining the medieval tower. The church tower was given its current appearance in 1731 with a baroque tail dome. The last major renovation dates from 1734-1741 and was carried out by Johann Erhard Straßburger (1675-1754), Duke of Saxony's master builder for Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg. According to his plans, the old nave was demolished and a new one was added at an acute angle to the tower. The Baroque interior with its wooden mirror vault, double galleries, gallery pulpit and organ has been preserved. The ceiling paintings, two altars and other paintings date from the 1950s.
