History: The Memleben Monastery, first mentioned in a document in 979, is a memorial foundation of Emperor Ottto II and his wife Theophanu in memory of his father Otto the Great (d. 973) and grandfather Henry I (d. 936). In a document of 998, Emperor Otto III transferred various localities, lands and vineyards to the Memleben monastery. This tradition was revived in 2012 with the planting of numerous vines. Since winegrowing was one of the main activities of the medieval monasteries, guests of the museum have the opportunity to actively participate in winegrowing.
