The district with 428 inhabitants (as of 31.12.2019) is located 2.5 km from the spa town of Bad Langensalza. On 01.01.1994 Merxleben was incorporated into Bad Langensalza.

The village was first mentioned in a document in 802. In 1866, the Battle of Bad Langensalza took place on the church hill of Merxleben, in which many soldiers lost their lives.
